The Guest Room 🛏️

Friends are always welcome

This took forever…….🔨🪜🥴

In the beginning…..

Actually, I started working on this room right after finishing the Library which was not long after I moved into my home. The walls were shiny…..even the electrician working around the house was horrified about that. He also pointed out that they also had glitter put into the paint–large glitter….lol.

The colors I chose were beautiful and looked great in the light. Unfortunately, this room gets the most light in the winter being a northern exposure. No matter, it is mostly a tomb….it is a dark room. The magic forest rug does look good, but the first set of paints were too dark for the room. I am using two colors as I have chair rail and want to bring in two analogous colors, which create a warm and inviting feeling, Comforting. So, where the library is a circus and fantasy room, the guest room is to be a magical forest.

The room….

Unfortunately, few images were taken before I started. You can see the old miner’s lamp and the shiny walls. For some strange reason, the previous owners had a thing for glossy walls and flat trim. The top wall section is a textured wall, while the bottom is just drywall. Oh, and yes, in the close ups you can see glitter on the ceiling also. I did not paint over that. I wanted to, but there is only so much time in one’s life….. 🙄

???

I taped, primed the bottom wall and painted the top textured area. All except a little area where I had to move the dresser on the window side of the room.

The color was amazingly beautiful and just how I imaged! This is the initial color I chose for the walls. The rich blue just worked perfect with the textured walls. It covered excellently also. I was so excited at how things were going with the top wall, I just dove right in and painted the bottom wall with my original green choice.

The original green I painted on the wall was just too dark so I settled on a light sage green and painted over the dark green. The yellowish tint just did not work for me. Maybe in another room with different lighting, but not this room. I ended up getting two other green colors. I tried them in sections this time instead of spending all that time painting most of the walls. I wasted a lot time painting and repainting the bottom half of the wall. The final color is an in-between color and looks great. This is obviously a product of a disorganized mind.

I got the walls painted except for a section on the window side of the wall. This turned out to be a mistake. I painted all the trim next.

I chose French medallions for the curtain holders that and blue ceramic leaves for the center sections. A white carved wood seed and rod with white metal rings. The wood and creamy colors felt like they mixed in with the whole magic forest theme. The curtains are super heavy blackout curtains made from linen. It was hard to find drapes that had the color I was looking for without having them made. I don’t need blackout curtains in this room, but they will be good in the winter months when temps can dip to -16 degrees.

I found this amazing ceramic door knob. I went over the top a bit here. It is an amazing door knob though.

Many of the rooms have holes in the wall that I have patched as the previous owners used the walls as door stops…

🙄

I did get door stops for all the rooms after patching the walls.

This is the carpet. I love this pattern. It is a William Morris forest pattern. This fits in with the whole art deco theme of the house.

I did get a floor vent in the art deco style also. It took a bit as the vent is an unusual size.

I caught a sale on ceiling fans and switched out that horrible little minor’s lamp for a modern fan with a light.

To bring in more of a Deco feel, I put on hand- painted face plates for the switches and outlets. It is such a nice touch. It really just adds that extra element that says custom home.

That is pretty much all the details. I did fix all the little issues like the side wall on the switch. I had the outlets replaced also. That is the actual plug part. So, the messy painted ones have been replaced. Unfortunately, I took pictures of the plates before I finished the room.

I put my encaustic lumens on the wall. It just felt like the room for them. I put up some other encaustic dream images also. It turned out nice and feels inviting. I wanted the room to be comforting and inviting for guests as guests are special people.

Here is the tour……

End notes….

Not painting that little section was a mistake. When I did get back to it, it took forever. I had to paint three different colors including the trim. The taping, prepping and waiting for things to dry turned it into at least a week long job. I did it in bits and it took a month, at least to get it all tied together. In the end, I am happy with the room. I have three rooms that are mostly finished. I need to do some more work on the office and I will have four completed rooms. There is always some bits and bobs to finish up in the rooms though.
